Refrigerator Clicking and Not Cooling in Naples?

When Your Refrigerator Clicks but Won’t Cool

A refrigerator can look almost normal after a brief power interruption. The lights come on. The display works. You may even hear a hum from the back. But when that hum turns into a click every few minutes and the temperature starts climbing, the cooling system may not actually be starting.

That was the problem at a recent service call in Naples.

The Problem: Lights On, Cooling Off

The homeowner noticed the refrigerator had stopped staying cold after a short power flicker. The interior lights and controls were working, but the compressor would try to start, hum briefly, then click off. A few minutes later, the same cycle repeated.

Because repeated clicking can have several causes, replacing the compressor based on the sound alone would have been an expensive guess.

What We Checked

Our technician started with the basics: supply voltage, temperature readings, condenser airflow, and the compressor start circuit. The compressor windings tested within range, and there was no sign that the compressor had mechanically seized.

The problem was the start relay. This small component helps the compressor start. When it begins to fail, the compressor may receive power but never get through a normal startup cycle. The overload protector then opens the circuit, producing the click the homeowner was hearing.

The Repair

We replaced the failed start relay, inspected the connections, and restarted the refrigerator. This time the compressor started normally and continued running without the repeated clicking.

We then monitored cabinet temperature and compressor operation to make sure the refrigerator was actually recovering—not simply turning on for a few minutes. Cooling stabilized, and the unit returned to normal operation.

Why Refrigerator Clicking Shouldn’t Be Ignored

An occasional sound from a refrigerator can be normal. Repeated clicking paired with rising temperatures is different. Possible causes can include:

  • a failing start relay or overload protector;
  • unstable power or a poor electrical connection;
  • a control issue;
  • a compressor that is struggling or locked.

The symptoms can sound similar, but the repair cost can be very different. That is why testing the start circuit and compressor matters before recommending major parts.

If your refrigerator is clicking and not cooling, avoid repeatedly unplugging and restarting it. Keep the doors closed as much as possible, move perishable food if temperatures rise above a safe range, and arrange professional diagnostics.
